Beware of eBay payment scam

Blog August 3, 2017

Dear Merchantette Users,

The Merchantette is a great tool for buying and selling items. In fact we have been around since 1976, and we pride ourselves on fighting to maintain a clean, safe environment for our audience. Unfortunately, it’s a buyer beware world, and despite our efforts to monitor each of the hundreds of ads we process weekly, the Merchantette environment is subject to scammers.

Below are details of a scam that we intercepted recently on our website. Thankfully the ad was removed within 24-hours.

The ad (shown below)was for a Kubota UTV.

As you can see it appears in very good condition, with an exceptionally low price (if its too good to be true, it probably is). The fake seller said her husband died, and she wanted to sell it immediately because she was moving to Iowa. The ad posts’ original location was listed as Columbus, Ohio. The seller said to protect both parties interests they are using eBay services to handle the payment part of the transaction.

When asked if the Kubota could be purchased with cash in-person, the seller said the Kubota was at eBay’s warehouse in Iowa ready to be shipped to a buyer, but assured that eBay offers a full five-day inspection period, wehre the potential buyer can either keep or decline the unit, and the seller would pay all shipping expenses.

The seller provided a fake invoice from eBay (see right) with instructions to purchase eBay gift cards in the amount of the Kubota and email back the 13-digit code on the back of the card. Once that happens the scam seller will have the money and any buyer would be out the money with nothing to show for it.

If you see an ad post on themerchantette.com you think could be a scam, please contact us, or contact your local authorities, so you don’t get scammed.
